of Cringletie, co. Peebles. Lieut.-Gen. Sir James Wolfe-Murray, K.C.B. R.A. 1853-1919. Chief of the Imperial Staff 1914-1915. Eldest son of James Wolfe-Murray DL JP of Cringletie, co. Peebles by his wife, Charlotte, daughter of John Whyte-Melville of Bennochy and Strathkinness by his wife, Lady Catherine Osborne, daughter of 5th Duke of Leeds. The Murrays of Cringletie descend from a younger son of Sir Alexander Murray, 2nd Bart and 12th laird of Blackbarony who granted the lands and barony of Cringletie to his son. Sir Alexanders great grandson Lt-Col Alexander Murray of Cringletie (died 1762) commanded the Grenadier Guards at the siege of Quebec and it was in his arms that General Wolfe died. He is depicted in Benjamin West's picture of the death of Wolfe. The family thereafter adopted the additional surname of Wolfe. His son, James Wolfe-Murray, Lord Cringletie, 1759-1836, a senator of the College of Justice in Scotland and a godson of Gen. Wolfe married Isabella, only daught
